An old blind woman from Ha Nam Province is in need of financial support to help take care of her daughter who suffers from mental illness.

Trung sits alone in doorway 

80-year-old Le Thi Trung lives in a dilapidated house in Thuong Village, Binh Luc District. Trung said her husband left and remarried decades ago. She has three daughters, but the first is married and lives far from home. The second one is also poor and in tight financial situation. Her husband died in a traffic accident, leaving her with three children to raise on her own.

Meanwhile, the third daughter, Le Thi Ha, is living with Trung, but she has been mentally handicapped since birth and depends on her mother for everything. Now that Trung is nearly blind, they have resorted to drinking lake water.

Because the family is one of most disadvantaged in the area, the local authorities have provided what support they could afford in rice. "If neighbours help us cook, then we still have something to eat. But if Ha tries to cook herself, we are left with a meal of uncooked rice," said Trung. For the last several days they have not eaten because the neighbour that usually helps them is out of town.

Ha's child graduated from secondary school and is working in the city in order to ease the family's burden. Trung said her most valuable asset is a portrait photo, which she wishes to be used at her funeral.
