Dantri/DTiNews readers support cancer-stricken mother

Dantri/DTiNews readers and benefactors have donated more than VND 175 million (USD 6,700) to support a widowed mother battling lung cancer while raising two school-age children on her own.

Representatives of Dantri/DTiNews and Bac Ninh General Hospital No. 2 on June 18 presented Pham Thi Thu, a resident of Bac Ninh Province, with VND 145.3 million donated by readers through the newspaper's charity programme.

The funds have been transferred directly to Thu's bank account.

In addition, the Thien Tam Foundation donated VND 30 million to the family and pledged monthly support of VND 1 million.

The total assistance received by Thu and her two children has now exceeded VND 175 million.

Thu expressed her gratitude to readers, donors, the hospital's social work department, the Thien Tam Foundation and local authorities for helping her family through its most difficult period.

Thu is undergoing treatment at Bac Ninh General Hospital No. 2, where doctors said her condition had stabilised after two months of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Nguyen Xuan Thuy, deputy director of Bac Ninh General Hospital No. 2, thanked the newspaper for helping connect donors with disadvantaged patients.

Thu's story was featured in Dantri's charity column in May.

Her husband died of lung cancer in 2025. During the Lunar New Year holiday in early 2026, Thu began suffering from a persistent cough, chest pain and breathing difficulties before being diagnosed with stage-three lung cancer.

Before falling ill, she worked various jobs to support her family and ensure her children could continue their education. Her illness has left her unable to work, pushing the family into financial hardship.

She is now raising two sons alone, including one who has recently passed the entrance examination for high school.

Thu said the support from readers and benefactors had given her renewed strength to continue treatment and care for her children, adding that her greatest wish was to recover and return home to her family.
