A downpour lasting more than two hours, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, flooded major roads across HCM City on October 1, leaving commuters struggling to get home.

Major roads including Phan Van Tri, Pham Van Dong and Nguyen Thai Son were heavily flooded, bringing traffic in some areas to a standstill.

The worst-hit roads included Phan Van Tri, Le Van Tho, Nguyen Van Khoi and Phan Huy Ich, where deep flooding left many vehicles unable to continue.

Workers, students and other commuters were forced to wait for the water to recede or wade through flooded streets to get home.

Nguyen Thai Hung, a construction worker, said he decided to wait rather than risk riding through deep water and potentially damaging his motorbike.

Residents were also seen helping move motorbikes to higher ground and clearing rubbish from drains to help floodwaters recede more quickly.

The rain hit during the evening rush hour, forcing schoolchildren and students to wade through flooded streets on their way home.
