VietJet launches Hanoi-Tainan flights, expands international network

Vietnamese budget carrier Vietjet has launched direct flights between Hanoi and Tainan in Taiwan, expanding its international network and strengthening air links between Vietnam and Taiwan.

The inaugural flight, VJ1942, landed at Tainan Airport on the morning of October 25 and was welcomed with a ceremonial water cannon salute. The return flight, VJ1943, departed for Hanoi later that day, marking the official launch of the route.

Vietjet is currently the only Vietnamese airline operating scheduled flights to Tainan.

The new service operates four return flights a week, with a flight time of around two to three hours. Passengers travelling from Tainan can also connect through Vietjet's network to destinations across Vietnam, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, Australia and Europe.

Vietjet Chief Executive Officer Nguyen Thanh Son said the new route would help strengthen tourism, business and cultural ties between the two destinations.

Tainan, known for its historic temples, Anping Fort, Shennong Street and local cuisine, is one of Taiwan's major cultural and historical centres.

Since launching its first Taiwan service in 2014, Vietjet has carried five million passengers on more than 38,000 flights between Vietnam and Taiwan.

The airline now operates eight direct routes linking Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung with Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc.

Vietjet has also recently launched services from Hanoi to Almaty in Kazakhstan and Prague in the Czech Republic, extending its network into Central Asia and Europe.

By January 2027, the airline plans to introduce additional routes connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Chiang Mai in Thailand and the Maldives, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with Cebu and Clark in the Philippines, and Danang with Osaka in Japan.

It also plans to launch a second Sydney route, serving the new Western Sydney Airport.

The expansion is part of Vietjet's efforts to strengthen international connectivity and meet growing travel demand.
