New Hanoi-Dong Dang railway proposed with 160 km/h design speed

A new double-track Hanoi-Dong Dang railway with a design speed of 160 km/h and some elevated sections has been proposed under a draft plan being reviewed by Vietnam's Ministry of Construction.

The draft plan for the Hanoi railway hub proposes upgrading the existing Hanoi-Lang Son Railway and developing a new Hanoi-Dong Dang line, both connecting the capital with Lang Son Province.

The proposals aim to improve rail infrastructure and reserve land for future development along the railway corridors.

The existing Hanoi-Lang Son Railway would remain in operation, with sections upgraded to meet future transport demand.

The route would start at Hanoi Station or Gia Lam Station, depending on the transfer of the inner-city railway to Hanoi authorities and the completion of an eastern ring railway.

The approximately 29-km section covered by the study extends from Hanoi to Vu Ninh Ward in Bac Ninh Province. The plan proposes upgrading the line to Class I railway standards and converting the section between Hanoi and Gia Lam stations into an urban railway.

The existing single-track section between Gia Lam and Bac Ninh, which accommodates both 1,000-mm and 1,435-mm gauges, would be upgraded to double-track standard gauge.

The proposed new Hanoi-Dong Dang Railway would begin at Gia Lam Station for passenger services and Yen Thuong Station for freight trains.

The roughly 29-km section within the study area would pass through Hanoi and Bac Ninh, ending near the boundary with the former Bac Giang Province.

The proposed route would initially follow the existing railway corridor before branching north near Bac Ninh Station and crossing the Cau River.

The new line would use double tracks with a standard gauge of 1,435 mm and a design speed of 160 km/h.

A separate six-kilometre double-track connection between Gia Lam and Yen Vien stations is also proposed. It would share a corridor with Hanoi's urban railway Line 1 but operate on separate infrastructure.

The railway would combine ground-level and elevated sections, running at ground level from Gia Lam and Yen Thuong to Tien Du before rising onto an elevated alignment.

Proposed stations within the Hanoi railway hub include Gia Lam, Yen Vien, Yen Thuong and Tien Du.

The alignment remains preliminary and will be refined during detailed planning or the project's pre-feasibility study.
