Dantri/DTiNews reporters and representatives of Thong Nhat Village in Hanoi's An Khanh Commune visited the family of Nguyen Thi Hai Yen on September 21 and presented a symbolic cheque for VND 129,189,709.
The donations, made by readers through Dantri's charity programme, have been fully transferred to bank accounts belonging to Yen and her husband, Luu Manh Quan.
Yen's circumstances were featured in a Dantri article published on August 20. She had been battling terminal tongue-base cancer while worrying about the future of her son, who has autism.
Her story prompted thousands of readers and donors to offer financial support to the family.
Yen died on August 31 after her condition deteriorated rapidly. Her mother, Ngo Thi Hanh, said only five days passed between the onset of severe breathing difficulties, which required oxygen support at home, and her death.
After completing funeral arrangements, Quan returned to work and continued taking his son to a specialised education centre for autism therapy.
On behalf of the family, Hanh and Quan thanked the newspaper, its readers and donors for their support during the family's difficult period.
Ngo Van Tien, secretary of the Thong Nhat Village Party cell and village head, also thanked Dantri and its readers for helping the family and other people facing serious illness and financial hardship.
