Cancer patient receives more than USD 4,400 in donations

A 57-year-old woman in Vinh Long Province who has been battling ovarian cancer has received more than VND 115 million in donations, giving her renewed hope of continuing treatment.

Dantri reporters recently presented Nguyen Thi Huong, 57, from Phong Thanh Commune in Vinh Long Province, with VND 106,089,115 (about USD 4,080) donated by the newspaper's readers.

Huong and her husband, Tran Van Quyen, 57, used to take on various agricultural jobs in their locality to earn a modest but sufficient living. Their circumstances changed dramatically last year when Huong was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after seeking medical attention for severe abdominal pain.

Her health deteriorated significantly. She had to undergo a hysterectomy and endure several painful rounds of chemotherapy.

Quyen said the couple had relied on their two children to cover medical expenses since his wife fell ill.

“I work as a hired coconut picker and earn less than VND 100,000 (about USD 3.85) a day. When illness struck, I simply couldn't manage the costs,” he said.

After Dantri published an article highlighting the family's plight, readers from across the country donated more than VND 106 million to help Huong pay for treatment. She also received an additional VND 9 million through her personal account, bringing total support to more than VND 115 million (about USD 4,430).

Huong thanked Dantri readers, saying the donations had given her a chance to continue treatment and sustain her life without placing an overwhelming burden on her family.

“I am using the donations to pay for treatment. I have also put VND 50 million (about USD 1,925) into savings to cover medication and follow-up appointments. I am deeply grateful to Dantri readers for their generosity, encouragement and support, which have given me the strength to keep fighting the illness,” she said emotionally.
