Microsoft lays off staff in Vietnam

Microsoft has confirmed layoffs in Vietnam, saying it will continue to honour its commitments in the market, but has not disclosed how many employees or roles are affected.

Social media posts on October 12 reported that Microsoft had laid off a number of employees in Vietnam.

One account, whose owner said they worked at Microsoft, reported receiving an invitation to a meeting on important business updates with company leaders and the human resources department. The person said the meeting concerned layoffs.

In a response to Dantri, a Microsoft spokesperson said the company was continually adjusting how it worked and organised its teams to support future priorities.

“These changes are implemented in various forms across the company and, in some cases, include difficult decisions that affect positions,” the spokesperson said.

The statement confirmed that job cuts had taken place in Vietnam.

“We are committed to supporting affected employees through this transition with care and respect,” the spokesperson added.

Microsoft said it remained committed to the Vietnamese market.

The company has not disclosed the number of employees affected or which positions were involved.

Microsoft entered Vietnam in 1996 and was among the early US technology companies to establish a local research and development workforce.

Microsoft Vietnam said it set up R&D engineering teams at its offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in 2024, making Vietnam the fourth market in Asia to host such a unit.
