Customs seize nearly 11kg of cannabis on cross-border buses

Customs officers in Ha Tinh Province have uncovered two cases of cannabis smuggling across the border in October, seizing nearly 11kg of the drug.

According to the Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance, the cases were detected this month at Cau Treo International Border Gate in coordination with other law enforcement agencies. One case has been formally prosecuted, while the other remains under investigation.

On October 11, officers inspected a passenger bus bearing Lao registration plate 3555 and discovered a suspicious consignment.

A search of cardboard boxes on the bus revealed 18 white plastic bags containing plant material suspected to be cannabis, weighing nearly 9kg in total.

Initial information indicated that the shipment had originated in Thailand, passed through Laos and then entered Vietnam. Border guards, customs officers and police in Hanoi and Bac Ninh are working together to establish the shipment’s origin and identify those involved.

In a separate case on October 2, customs officers inspecting an incoming passenger bus at Cau Treo International Border Gate noticed suspicious signs on a vehicle bearing Lao registration plate 2448.

A search of four cardboard boxes uncovered 48 metal containers. Six of them held packets containing a ground plant-based substance suspected to be cannabis material.

Forensic testing by the Ha Tinh provincial police confirmed that the seized substance was cannabis, weighing nearly 2kg.

The case was subsequently prosecuted, with investigations continuing in accordance with the law.
