Cap Xuan Ta, chairman of My Thuy Commune’s People’s Committee, said on October 13 that local authorities had worked with relevant agencies to handle the carcass after residents found it on the beach.
The cause of the turtle’s death has not been determined.
The animal was discovered on the morning of October 12 on a beach in My Thuy Commune. It was already decomposing when found and measured about 1.2 metres long, with an estimated weight of 105kg.
Ta said the local authorities had reported the incident to Quang Tri Province’s Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance Sub-department for handling in accordance with regulations.
The carcass was subsequently disposed of and buried to protect environmental hygiene.
Ta added that local authorities would continue raising public awareness about marine wildlife conservation, particularly the protection of rare and endangered species.
