Quang Tri police hand rescued pangolin to wildlife centre

Police in Quang Tri Province have handed over a rescued pangolin to a wildlife conservation centre after detaining a man suspected of illegally transporting the protected animal.

Le Thuy Commune police said on November 4 that the pangolin had been transferred to the Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Development Centre under the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board for care and rehabilitation.

The animal, weighing approximately 3.2 kilogrammes, belongs to Group IB, which covers endangered, rare and protected forest animals.

Police intercepted the animal on October 31 during a patrol along an inter-communal road in An Xa Village, Le Thuy Commune.

A man, 40, and residing in Cua Mec Village, Kim Ngan Commune, was detained while transporting the pangolin.

Authorities said the species is subject to strict protection, with illegal hunting, captivity, transportation and trading punishable under Vietnamese law.

Police have prepared a case file for further legal action, while the pangolin will receive care and rehabilitation before being released into its natural habitat.

Local police urged residents not to participate in illegal wildlife hunting or trading and to report suspected violations to the authorities.
