Northern Vietnam braces for cold snap, lows of 9 degrees Celsius

A strong cold front is forecast to sweep across northern Vietnam around November 8-9, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures, with some mountainous areas potentially reaching 9 degrees Celsius.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, a weaker cold front is expected to affect northern Vietnam from the night of November 5 to November 6, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms.

A stronger cold front is then forecast to arrive around November 8-9, triggering further rain and thunderstorms and a significant drop in temperatures.

Minimum temperatures across northern and north-central Vietnam are expected to range from 16 to 19 degrees Celsius, falling below 13 degrees in some northern mountainous areas.

Conditions will turn cooler across the region, with colder weather in the mountains.

According to US weather service AccuWeather, temperatures in Hanoi are expected to range from 21 to 31 degrees Celsius through the weekend before dropping to around 18-25 degrees as the stronger cold front arrives.

In high-altitude areas above 1,500 metres, including Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province, temperatures are forecast to range from 14 to 19 degrees in the coming days, potentially falling to around 9 degrees during the stronger cold spell.

Meanwhile, widespread heavy rain is forecast from November 9 to 12 across central Vietnam, including areas from Thanh Hoa to Hue and Danang, as well as eastern parts of Quang Ngai through Dak Lak.

Forecasters said the heavy rain would result from strong cold air at lower atmospheric levels combining with easterly wind disturbances aloft and the region's mountainous terrain.
