Dalat proposes six electric rail lines spanning more than 100km

A proposed network of six electric rail lines linking central Dalat with Lien Khuong Airport and major tourist attractions has been included in a draft urban master plan.

The Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee said on November 4 that the proposal forms part of a general master plan for five wards in Dalat through 2050, which is being reviewed and refined following public consultation.

The proposed urban rail network would comprise six lines with a combined length of around 101.43km, using either streetcars or monorails. The routes would connect central Dalat with Lien Khuong Airport and popular attractions including Suoi Vang Lake, Langbiang Mountain, Tuyen Lam Lake and the Valley of Love.

The line linking Dalat Railway Station with Lien Khuong Airport in Duc Trong Commune has been prioritised for study and potential implementation before 2030. It is intended to provide an additional passenger transport option between the airport and the city centre. The other five lines are scheduled for development after 2030.

Under the proposal, the Dalat Railway Station-Suoi Vang route would be 18.5km long, while the An Kroet intersection-Langbiang line would cover 8.55km and the Dalat Railway Station-Tuyen Lam Lake route 15.78km. Two other lines would link Dalat Railway Station with the Valley of Love and Tung Lam intersection.

The plan also proposes upgrading three existing bus routes by 2035: Prenn Pass-Mai Anh Dao Bus Station, Cam Ly-Darahoa and Prenn Pass-Lien Nghia Bus Station. They would be converted into streetcar or monorail services.

Separately, the plan calls for the restoration of the 84km Thap Cham-Dalat railway, which uses a 1,000mm gauge, to support tourism and improve connections between Dalat and the South Central Coast.

The consulting unit said the proposed public transport network was expected to ease pressure on roads, connect tourist destinations with urban gateways and help preserve Dalat's landscape.

The draft master plan covers five wards: Xuan Huong-Dalat, Cam Ly-Dalat, Lam Vien-Dalat, Xuan Truong-Dalat and Lang Biang-Dalat, with a combined area of approximately 68,088 hectares.

It envisions a shift away from a city concentrated around its core towards a multi-centre urban model, with functions distributed according to the characteristics of each area.
