Dantri/DTiNews readers donate over VND 156 million to bereaved family

A family in Phu Tho Province has received over VND 156 million (USD 5,950) from Dantri/DTiNews readers, easing hardship after their daughter’s death and supporting their son with Down syndrome.

Dantri/DTiNews, in coordination with authorities in Dai Dong Commune, presented Bui Thi Nhan's family with VND 156.45 million donated by readers and benefactors on August 29. The full amount had been transferred directly to the family's bank account.

Nhan's plight was featured in Dantri/DTiNews' Compassionate Hearts section in June.

Her daughter, Bui Thi Huyen Trang, born in 2004, was involved in a motorbike accident in 2023. During treatment, doctors discovered that she had cancer in her left thigh bone.

To pay for her treatment, Nhan and her husband sold their only home and moved into a small space at the grandparents' house. Trang's grandfather also sold his garden land and borrowed money to help cover medical expenses.

Despite chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery costing over VND 600 million (USD 22,810), the cancer spread to Trang's lungs and caused heart complications. She later died after a prolonged battle with the disease.

The couple have since struggled to repay their debts while caring for their three-year-old son, who has Down syndrome, as well as elderly family members who require frequent medical treatment.

Following the newspaper's report, readers rallied to support the family.

Nhan thanked donors for their assistance, saying the money would help cover living expenses, care for her young son and ease the financial burden left by years of borrowing to fund her daughter's treatment.

Bui Van Yen, deputy head of Dai Dong Commune's Party Building Committee, thanked Dantri readers and donors, describing the contribution as timely and practical support for the family, particularly in caring for their youngest child.
