Do Trung Tuyen was admitted to the hospital on June 18 with cardiogenic shock caused by acute myocarditis, which led to multiple organ failure, his doctors said.
He has since been placed on a ventilator, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), continuous dialysis and medication to support his heart and circulation. Doctors said the damage to his heart was too severe for it to recover, leaving a heart transplant as his only chance of survival.
"The patient is still very young. If he receives timely treatment, including a heart transplant, he still has a chance to recover and return to his family," said Dr Vuong Xuan Toan of the hospital's Intensive Care Centre.
The operation is expected to cost billions of dong, far beyond the means of Tuyen's family, who rely on farming for their income.
According to his father, Do Van Nam, the family had borrowed more than VND 200 million to cover medical expenses but had exhausted their savings after nearly a month of intensive care.
Before falling ill, Tuyen worked at a garment factory to help support his parents and younger brother.
Doctors have called on donors and the wider community to help fund the transplant, saying it offers the young man his best hope of survival.
