Vietnam to produce first domestically made next-generation vaccines by 2028

French pharmaceutical group Sanofi and VNVC plan to begin producing next-generation vaccines in Vietnam from 2028 under a new manufacturing partnership.

French pharmaceutical company Sanofi and Vietnam Vaccine Joint Stock Company (VNVC) have unveiled a roadmap to produce the first next-generation vaccines manufactured in Vietnam, with production scheduled to begin in 2028.

The announcement was made at the Vietnam–France High-Level Conference, jointly organised by Vietnam's Ministry of Health and the French Embassy in Vietnam on July 9.

At the event, VNVC and Sanofi outlined new progress in their partnership to manufacture Sanofi's advanced vaccines at the VNVC Vaccine and Bioproducts Factory. Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly produce several high-demand vaccines for children and adults, with the first next-generation Sanofi vaccines expected to roll off production lines in Vietnam in 2028.

VNVC also provided an update on the construction of its Vaccine and Bioproducts Factory and identified a portfolio of priority next-generation vaccines to meet growing demand for high-quality immunisation among children and adults in Vietnam.

The facility is being built in Tay Ninh Province with an initial investment of more than VND 2.5 trillion (about USD 95.6 million) on a site covering more than 26,000 square metres. It is designed to comply with EU-GMP, WHO-GMP and US FDA manufacturing standards and will have an annual production capacity of around 100 million vaccine doses.

The factory is expected to become operational by the end of 2027, begin manufacturing vaccines in 2028 and commercially launch next-generation vaccine products in 2029.

Addressing the conference, National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh said the Communist Party, the National Assembly and the government had introduced a range of policies to promote research, technology transfer and the development of Vietnam's vaccine industry. She said next-generation vaccines had been designated as a national strategic technology product.

Nguyen Thi Thanh called on the parties to establish a clear cooperation roadmap to accelerate the development of vaccine products for the public while supporting Vietnam's ambition to become a regional hub for research, clinical trials, manufacturing and distribution of next-generation vaccines.

Ngo Chi Dung, chairman and chief executive of VNVC, said the company hoped for additional breakthrough policies that would encourage businesses to continue investing in strategic technology products.

"We hope these mechanisms will enable people to gain earlier access to advanced vaccines at more affordable prices, gradually strengthen domestic production of critical next-generation vaccines, and enhance Vietnam's healthcare self-reliance and national health security," he said.
