Vietnam's National Assembly on August 24 approved a resolution adjusting the investment policy for the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong railway project.

Under the revised plan, the railway will pass through six provinces and cities: Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen and Haiphong. The main line will extend approximately 363km, with an additional 63km of branch lines.
The project will have a design speed of 160km/h on the section from Lao Cai Station to Nam Haiphong Station, 120km/h through the Hanoi rail hub area and 80km/h on the remaining sections.
The railway will use conventional rail technology. Electric traction will be deployed on the main line and on the branch line connecting Yen Vien Station and Gia Lam Station. Diesel traction will be used on branch lines serving seaports, with plans to convert to clean-energy locomotives in the future.
The project is expected to require approximately 2,075 hectares of land and has a total estimated investment of VND 289.339 trillion (about USD 11.1 billion).
Under the resolution, authorities aim to achieve substantial completion of the project no later than 2030.
