Over 2,300 households evacuated as floods hit northern Vietnam

More than 2,300 households in four northern and north-central localities have been evacuated to safety as heavy rain and flooding linked to Storm Narra affect the region.

The Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention said 2,314 households had been evacuated by August 23, including 2,085 in Lang Son, 27 in Quang Ninh, 80 in Bac Ninh and 122 in Thanh Hoa.

Local authorities are providing essential services at evacuation sites while continuing to identify households affected by flooding.

One person has died after a landslide hit a house in Lang Son. A total of 265 homes were damaged or had their roofs blown off, including 221 in Lang Son and 44 in Cao Bang, while 2,816 homes in Lang Son were flooded.

Nearly 3,800 hectares of rice fields in Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh, Hanoi and Cao Bang were inundated. Heavy rain also caused landslides and flooding at 761 locations in Cao Bang, Lang Son and Bac Ninh, disrupting traffic.

From the evening of August 23 through August 24, rainfall of 30-70 mm is forecast for the northeast, southern Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa, with some areas receiving more than 150 mm.

Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh, Haiphong, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa could receive 60-120 mm, with rainfall exceeding 250 mm in some areas.

Water levels on the Luc Nam River are falling, while those on the Thuong and Ky Cung rivers are changing slowly.

Through August 25, flood peaks on several rivers in Lang Son, Cao Bang and Thai Nguyen are forecast to reach warning levels two to three, with some exceeding level three. The Thai Binh River at Pha Lai in Haiphong is expected to reach warning levels one to two.
