The requiem was also held to mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims and part of the movement for 2018-2022 period where monks help maintain traffic safety. Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The attended the ceremony.

This is the seventh year the ceremony was held by the National Traffic Safety Committee and Vietnam Buddhist Sangha. Besides the main ceremony at the headquarter of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Hanoi, all member pagodas in Vietnam will hold their own requiems during the Vu Lan and the Amnesty of Unquiet Spirits Festival on the 15th of the lunar July.

The ceremonies commemorate the victims and call for the public to act together to prevent traffic accidents.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, 10,350 accidents occurred in the first seven months of 2018, with 4,716 people were killed and 8,106 were injured. All the numbers went down by 7.36%, 0.95% and 12.23% respectively compared to the same period last year.
