Mother and son drown while swimming in Ha Tinh stream

A woman and her eight-year-old son drowned after slipping into deep water while swimming in a stream in Ha Tinh Province, local authorities said.

A 33-year-old woman and her eight-year-old son drowned while swimming in a stream in Huong Khe Commune, Ha Tinh Province, on the afternoon of July 8.

The victims were identified as Huyen, 33, and Le Quang Bao, 8, from Phuc Trach Commune.

According to local authorities, the mother and son had travelled with relatives to a stream in Huong Khe Commune at around 1.45 pm to cool off from the summer heat.

A few minutes later, both reportedly slipped into a deep section of the stream and were pulled underwater.

Relatives and others at the scene attempted to rescue them but were unsuccessful. Their bodies were recovered from the water several minutes later.

Local authorities said parts of the stream are more than 2 metres deep.

Huong Khe Commune contains numerous streams running through farm areas, many of which have wide channels, deep pools and slippery rocks. Officials have previously installed warning signs highlighting the risk of drowning, particularly for children during the summer months.
