An Giang tops Mekong Delta in first-half economic growth

An Giang Province recorded the fastest economic growth in the Mekong Delta during the first half of 2026, driven by industry, services and a tourism boom.

An Giang Province recorded gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth of 8.83 per cent in the first six months of 2026, the highest rate in Vietnam's Mekong Delta and the 16th highest nationwide.

According to a six-month report released by the An Giang Provincial Party Committee on July 8, the province's industrial and construction sector expanded by 16.8 per cent, the strongest performance among all sectors. Services grew by 9.45 per cent, while agriculture, forestry and fisheries increased by 3.62 per cent.

Tourism was a key driver of growth, with the province welcoming more than 16.6 million visitors during the period. Tourism revenue reached VND 39.283 trillion (USD 1.50 billion), an increase of 34.4 per cent compared with the same period last year.

A major milestone during the first half of the year was the successful organisation of the province's 2026 planning announcement and investment promotion conference.

At the event, authorities approved investment policies for 19 projects with a combined registered capital of VND 66.9 trillion (USD 2.56 billion). The province also signed memoranda of understanding worth nearly VND 1.5 quadrillion (USD 57.4 billion) with several major corporations.

Speaking at a conference on July 8, Nguyen Tien Hai, secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee, said that despite positive results across multiple sectors, the province had fallen short of its growth target of 9.22 per cent for the first half of the year.

Hai noted that public investment disbursement had reached only 30.51 per cent of the annual target assigned by the prime minister as of June 30.

He identified three major obstacles to future growth: outdated development thinking marked by dependence and complacency; shortcomings in the quality of some officials, with some reluctant to make decisions for fear of mistakes; and weaknesses in implementation, resulting in a significant gap between policy decisions and practical outcomes.

Hai instructed provincial authorities to complete a review of delayed projects during July and remove bottlenecks to unlock investment and economic resources.

The An Giang Provincial Party Committee has set a full-year GRDP growth target of at least 10.71 per cent.
