HCM City is set to face a high risk of dengue fever outbreaks during the rainy season if proper disease prevention measures are not taken.

According to the HCM City Centre for Diseases Control, the city has recorded 3,600 dengue fever cases in 22 districts and Thu Duc City this year. The districts of Binh Chanh, Tan Binh, Binh Tan and District 12 have been hardest hit.

Dengue fever in the city started in May and would last until November.

Local authorities have urged districts to take drastic measures for dengue fever prevention and control. District 12 has focused on communication efforts through various channels, such as leaflet distribution, radio broadcasts, and mobile loudspeakers, to help raise people’s awareness of the disease. The district has conducted regular sanitation campaigns at high-risk locations and weekly mosquito larvicide spraying.

Thanh Dong Commune in Cu Chi District has defined 54 high-risk areas of possible dengue fever infection. Local authorities have reminded people to remove stagnant water containers.

Dr Le Hong Nga, deputy director of the HCM City Centre for Diseases Control, said that around 8,000 spots in the city are vulnerable to dengue fever infection.

Each household needs to ensure hygiene, the most important factor for disease prevention and control, Nga added.

Last year, Vietnam reported 172,000 cases of dengue fever, causing 43 deaths.
