School construction project restarts after eight months of flood isolation

A classroom construction project funded through donations mobilised by Dantri Newspaper has resumed construction in Nghe An Province after months of disruption caused by severe flooding.

The project, located in Cha Nga Village in My Ly Commune, Nghe An Province, was delayed for more than eight months after floods cut off the remote border area. Work restarted in early March once access to the site was partially restored.

The construction of two classrooms has received strong support from donors. Giao Hang Tiet Kiem Company contributed VND 400 million (about USD 16,000), while the charity group CEO 1984 Volunteer Group donated VND 320 million. The project aims to create a safer and more durable learning environment for local children.

In July 2025, a historic flood devastated My Ly Commune, washing away infrastructure and destroying the only road connecting the commune centre to Cha Nga Village. The route effectively turned into a river, leaving the village isolated for months.

Cha Nga school site lies about 25km from the commune centre and has long suffered from poor facilities, cramped classrooms and the absence of adequate boarding arrangements for students. The original plan included two classrooms for kindergarten and primary pupils with a total estimated budget of VND 800 million (about USD 32,000).

Local authorities mobilised militia forces, police, border guards and hundreds of residents to repair the road linking Bac Ly Commune to Cha Nga Village. Sections of the road were manually levelled and reinforced, while landslide points were temporarily stabilised so that small trucks could pass.

Once the road became accessible, the contractor quickly resumed construction. Hoang Van Kieu, a representative of the construction unit, said transporting materials remains challenging due to the rugged terrain, but the team has arranged suitable manpower and machinery to accelerate the work.

“We are determined to ensure quality and safety while completing the classrooms as soon as possible so the children can have proper facilities before the next rainy season,” Kieu said.

Vy Thi Thoan, principal of My Ly 2 Kindergarten, said the project’s restart has brought great joy to teachers and students. The Cha Nga school currently serves around 20-25 children from ethnic minority families who have been studying in inadequate conditions, with leaking roofs during the rainy season and cold drafts in winter.

“The construction restarting is something we have been hoping for over many months,” Thoan said.

Luong Van Bay, chairman of My Ly Commune People’s Committee, emphasised the importance of the project for a border commune with a high poverty rate and extremely difficult transport conditions.

“The resumption of construction will not only improve learning conditions for children but also demonstrates the care and support of Dantri Newspaper and donors for residents in border areas,” he said.
