Donations help orphaned boy ahead of new school year

More than VND 126 million (USD 4,820) has been donated to support a 12-year-old boy in Quang Tri Province whose mother died earlier this year and whose father is deaf and mute.

Dantri Newspaper, in coordination with local authorities, has presented more than VND 126 million (USD 4,820) in donations to the family of Nguyen Duc Quan, a 12-year-old boy from Cua Tung Commune in Quang Tri Province.

The funds were contributed by readers and benefactors after Dantri published a report on Quan's difficult circumstances.

Quan is a student at Cua Tung Secondary School. His father, Nguyen Duc Ai, 44, was born deaf and mute, while his mother, Ho Thi Suong, died in early April after years of battling kidney failure.

The family had previously suffered another tragedy. In 2020, Quan's older brother, Nguyen Duc Manh, died suddenly at the age of nine after choking on a foreign object.

Since his mother's death, Quan has been cared for by his grandmother, Ho Thi Huong, who is nearly 70 years old. She has long worried about her grandson's future as her age and declining health make it increasingly difficult to support him.

Receiving the donations alongside Quan, Huong struggled to contain her emotions. She said she had deposited the money into a savings account to help secure her grandson's education in the years ahead.

“For a family with such financial difficulties, and at my age, I did not know how I would continue paying for his education,” she said.

“Thanks to the kindness and support of so many people, I feel much more at ease. I only hope Quan studies well, finds a career in the future and can support himself.”

Sitting beside his grandmother, Quan thanked the donors who had helped his family and promised to study hard in return for their generosity.

“My grandmother is getting old and often suffers from aches and pains, so I worry about her a lot,” he said.

“After school, I help her clean the house and look after the family's cows and chickens so she does not have to work as hard. I will do my best at school so that one day I can take care of my father and repay my grandmother for everything she has done for me.”

Le Van Vuong, deputy head of the Culture Office of Cua Tung Commune, thanked Dantri and its readers for supporting the family.

“This assistance is extremely meaningful and practical for Quan's family,” he said.

“We hope the funds will be used effectively to support his education. We also hope Quan continues to study hard and build a brighter future for himself.”

Local authorities said they hoped more disadvantaged families would receive similar support through the efforts of charitable organisations, media outlets and members of the public.
