Do Dang Khoa, from Co Do Commune, is recovering at Viet Duc University Hospital after receiving a liver from a brain-dead donor.
His father, Do Van Long, 55, said Khoa inherited the same liver condition that claimed the lives of his two older siblings.
Long’s first son died from liver disease in 1996 at the age of one. His daughter, born two years later, was diagnosed with liver and spleen disease and died in 2023 after years of treatment.

Khoa, born in 2010, was also diagnosed with an inherited liver disorder. His condition deteriorated in 2025, when doctors said a liver transplant was needed to save his life.
The family had already endured another loss. Long’s wife, who had developed mental health problems after years of caring for their sick children, drowned in a pond near their home in 2020.
With mounting debts from years of medical treatment and relying largely on farming for a living, Long could not afford the transplant, which was expected to cost around VND1 billion.
Doctors at Viet Duc University Hospital went ahead with the operation when a suitable donated liver became available, despite the family being unable to make an advance payment.

According to Dr Do Hai Dang of the hospital’s Organ Transplant Centre, Khoa had end-stage cirrhosis associated with inherited polycystic liver and kidney disease.
He had suffered serious complications for years, including recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding and severe hepatopulmonary syndrome, which caused persistently low blood oxygen levels.
Following consultations, doctors decided a transplant was necessary. A liver from a brain-dead donor became available at the critical time, allowing the team to perform the emergency operation.
The transplant was successful, but Khoa still requires close post-operative monitoring and long-term anti-rejection medication, adding significantly to the family’s financial burden.
Doctors have appealed for support to help the teenager continue treatment and recover.
‘I have already lost two children, and their mother is gone too. Please help me save Khoa,’ Long said.
