Nguyen Van Cuong, who lives in Phu Xuan Hamlet, Phu An Commune in An Giang Province, suffers from chronic kidney failure, complications from a fractured femur that led to hip joint necrosis, and pleural effusion.
His wife, Pham Thi Kim Xuyen, 35, has become his full-time carer, helping him with meals and daily activities and tending to infected wounds around his hips.
Cuong was injured in an accident in Binh Duong in 2023 and later diagnosed with kidney failure. The family gradually exhausted its savings and sold household belongings to pay for dialysis, medicines and travel for treatment.
With her husband now bedridden, Xuyen can no longer take jobs far from home. She shells cashew nuts to earn money while caring for him.
She earns VND 25,000 for every five kilogrammes of processed cashew nuts, barely enough to cover food, medicine and expenses for their 11-year-old son, who is in the second grade.
The family mainly relies on social assistance and support from neighbours, while debts incurred during Cuong's treatment have risen to more than VND 100 million (USD 3,800).
Their son is currently staying with his maternal grandparents in Dong Thap Province so he can continue attending school, while relatives help cover some of his books and other school expenses.
Xuyen said the family sometimes has less than VND 20,000 left at home and can only give Cuong painkillers when his condition worsens.
Duong Thanh Loc, chairman of the Phu An Commune People's Committee, said Cuong's family was classified as a poor household facing particularly difficult circumstances.
Cuong receives around VND 750,000 in monthly state assistance, while the commune has also provided support within its available resources.
Loc said the family's medical expenses far exceed the assistance available locally and expressed hope that donors could help them through their difficulties.
