New crossing brings safer travel to Lang Son villagers

Residents of a remote community in Lang Son Province have welcomed the opening of a new flood culvert that will make travel safer, particularly during the rainy season.

Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper, in coordination with the People's Committee of Thien Thuat Commune, held an inauguration ceremony on May 30 for the Khuoi Ngau culvert in Khuoi Hap Hamlet, Lang Son Province.

Built across the Khuoi Ngau stream, the project includes an 11-metre-long, five-metre-wide flood culvert and more than 50 metres of concrete access road measuring over 3 metres in width.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Xuan Toan, deputy editor-in-chief of Dantri/Dtinews, expressed gratitude to the newspaper’s readers nationwide and thanked the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Lang Son Province and local authorities for supporting Dantri’s charitable activities in the area.

“Following this project, Dantri reporters will continue surveying temporary housing in the area with a view to supporting poor families through new home construction,” Toan said.

He also expressed hope that the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Lang Son Province would continue helping the newspaper identify communities most in need of assistance.

Addressing the event, Nguyen Hoang Tung, standing vice chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Lang Son Province, said projects such as the Khuoi Ngau culvert had a significant impact on local livelihoods.

“The Khuoi Ngau culvert will make travel more convenient and safer for residents, especially schoolchildren,” he said.

On behalf of the committee, Tung thanked Dantri, its readers and benefactors for their contributions, while expressing hope for continued cooperation in supporting disadvantaged communities.

To mark both the inauguration and International Children's Day, Dantri presented 20 gifts to disadvantaged students in Thien Thuat Commune. Each student received VND 500,000 (approximately USD 19) in cash.

Hoang Anh Vu, chairman of the People's Committee of Thien Thuat Commune, said Khuoi Hap Hamlet remained one of the area’s most disadvantaged communities, particularly in terms of transport infrastructure.

“During the rainy season, crossing the Khuoi Ngau stream has posed significant risks for residents and students. This project is highly practical, helping people travel more safely and conveniently while also contributing to local socio economic development and improving living standards,” Vu said.

He thanked Dantri, its readers and donors for contributing funding to the project, as well as provincial authorities for supporting its implementation and ensuring construction quality.

Vu also praised the construction team and local residents, who contributed labour to help complete the project on schedule.

The Khuoi Ngau flood culvert was built at a total cost of VND 717.32 million (approximately USD 27,600). Local authorities contributed VND 567.32 million (approximately USD 21,800), while Dantri provided VND 150 million (approximately USD 5,800) from donations made by readers.
