Two arrested over attempted illegal border crossing in Tay Ninh

Vietnamese border guards have arrested two men accused of organising the illegal departure of a Japanese national from Vietnam into Cambodia.

Phuoc Chi Border Guard Station in Tay Ninh Province has launched criminal proceedings for organising the illegal exit of another person and detained two suspects in connection with the case.

According to authorities, at about 12.40 pm on August 17, a patrol operating in Phuoc Thuan Village, Phuoc Chi Commune, stopped a motorcycle driven by Mang Van Do, 60, a resident of Phuoc Chi Commune.

The vehicle was carrying Tran Van Cong, 25, from Haiphong, and a Japanese national identified as O.H., 46.

Following an inspection, officers determined that the group was attempting to organise the illegal departure of O.H. from Vietnam into Cambodia.

During questioning at Phuoc Chi Border Guard Station, Do allegedly told investigators that he had been hired by an unidentified man to transport Cong and O.H. to the border for an illegal crossing. He said he had been promised VND 4 million (about USD 153) for the trip.

Cong told investigators that he had known O.H. previously and had agreed to help him travel to Cambodia for VND 5 million (about USD 191), with all travel-related expenses paid by the Japanese citizen.

The border guard station subsequently transferred the suspects to Tay Ninh Province Police for further investigation and legal proceedings in accordance with Vietnamese law.
