Vietnam’s passport is ranked 86th in the Henley Passport Index 2026, the country’s highest position in the past five years, according to the latest update released on January 13.
The ranking shows Vietnam moving up four places compared with the index published in December 2025.
Vietnamese passport holders can now access 49 destinations without a visa or with a visa on arrival or electronic travel authorisation, out of a total of 199 countries and territories.
Most of these destinations are in south-east Asia, including Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar and Malaysia, as well as island nations such as Cape Verde, the Comoros, the Cook Islands and the Maldives.
The highest ranking Vietnam has ever achieved in the more than 20-year history of the Henley Passport Index was 78th, recorded in 2006 and 2007.
Vietnam currently grants visa-free entry to visitors from nearly 40 countries and territories.
In the latest index, Singapore retained its position as the world’s most powerful passport, with its citizens able to enter 192 destinations without a visa. The top 10 rankings remained largely unchanged, featuring familiar countries such as Japan, South Korea and members of the European Union. The United States returned to the top 10, rising one place from its position in December 2025.
