On August 27, Pham Thanh Trung, commander of the My Quy Tay Border Gate Border Guard Station under the Tay Ninh Provincial Border Guard Command, said the unit had co-operated with other agencies to detect and detain the pair.

At about 11.45 pm on August 26, patrol officers were operating around 250 metres inside Vietnamese territory from border marker 186 when they spotted two women walking towards Vietnam from Cambodia. The officers ordered them to stop for an inspection.

The two women, aged 58 and 45, were identified as local residents. One told officials that she had previously crossed into Cambodia illegally. The other said she had travelled to Cambodia through the My Quy Tay Border Gate but had subsequently lost her passport.

The two then attempted to return to Vietnam through an unauthorised crossing point, but were detected by the patrol team.

Officers drew up a record of the incident and took the women to the My Quy Tay Border Gate Border Guard Station for further verification and handling in accordance with the law.
