Widespread thunderstorms raise flash flooding risk in southern Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City and southern Vietnam are forecast to see scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some areas facing heavy rain and localised flooding, particularly in the afternoon and evening.

The Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Centre forecasts cloudy skies, scattered showers and thunderstorms across Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces and cities on October 20, with heavy rain possible in some areas.

Temperatures are expected to range from 23-26 degrees Celsius at night and in the early morning to 30-33 degrees Celsius during the day, with some places exceeding 33 degrees Celsius.

The weather agency said a low-pressure trough extending across southern Vietnam would remain active, sustaining showers and thunderstorms across the region.

In the Mekong Delta, rain could begin early in the morning, particularly in areas of the former Dong Thap, Can Tho, Vinh Long and Long An provinces. Elsewhere in the region, showers are expected mainly in the afternoon and evening. Heavy rain is possible in Dong Nai and Lam Dong provinces.

In Ho Chi Minh City, rainfall is forecast to be concentrated in the afternoon and evening, raising the risk of localised flooding, particularly in areas with limited drainage capacity.

Authorities have advised residents to follow weather forecasts and warnings and plan their journeys accordingly. People should avoid deeply flooded roads during heavy rain.

Motorists are urged to remain alert and reduce speed in wet conditions, while watching for associated hazards such as strong wind gusts, lightning and thunderstorms with possible whirlwinds.
