Haiphong family hands over bear after 24 years in captivity

A family in Haiphong has voluntarily handed over an Asiatic black bear kept in captivity since 2002, allowing it to receive professional care and rehabilitation.

Nam Trieu Ward in Haiphong coordinated the handover on October 19 with the city’s Forest Protection Department and Bach Ma National Park.

The bear, scientifically known as Ursus thibetanus, had been kept by the family of Chu Van Giap, born in 1952 and living in Nam Trieu Ward, since 2002.

During that time, the family regularly cooperated with authorities on inspections and monitoring, and complied with regulations on wildlife protection.

Following awareness-raising efforts by local authorities, the Haiphong Forest Protection Department and Animals Asia, the family recognised the importance of transferring the bear to a professional wildlife rescue and care facility and agreed to hand it over to the state voluntarily.

After the transfer, the bear was taken to Bach Ma National Park for continued care, rehabilitation and conservation in suitable conditions.
