Officials from An Giang Province and Cambodia's Kep Province signed a new cooperation agreement on August 26 to continue the search, recovery and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia during past conflicts.
The agreement, signed in Kep Province, covers the 2026-2027 dry-season campaign and follows more than two decades of joint efforts between the two countries.
During the ceremony, representatives reviewed previous cooperation results and agreed to continue facilitating the activities of Team K92, a unit under the An Giang Provincial Military Command responsible for locating and recovering remains in Cambodia.
According to the An Giang Special Task Committee, since the implementation of an agreement signed between the Vietnamese and Cambodian governments on August 28, 2000, search teams from An Giang have recovered and repatriated 4,414 sets of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and civilian experts from six Cambodian provinces.
In Kep Province alone, Team K92 has recovered 91 sets of remains, including 12 during the 2025-2026 dry season.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Le Van Phuoc, vice chairman of the An Giang People's Committee and head of the provincial special task committee, thanked Kep authorities, armed forces and local residents for supporting Team K92's operations.
Phuoc noted that changes in terrain and battlefield conditions over time have made the search increasingly difficult and that many remains have yet to be located.
He expressed hope that Kep Province would continue assisting with information gathering and the identification of potential burial sites to improve the effectiveness of future recovery missions.
The search and repatriation programme is part of ongoing efforts by Vietnam and Cambodia to locate and honour those who died during periods of conflict and to return their remains to families and communities in Vietnam.
