Traditional folk singing to feature on Halong Bay sailing tours

Visitors to Halong Bay will soon be able to enjoy traditional folk singing aboard wooden sailing boats, adding a cultural experience to tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

The performances will feature hat doi, a traditional form of call-and-response singing between men and women that originated among fishing communities in Halong Bay, Quang Ninh City.

The songs, often centred on love and everyday life, reflect the cultural heritage of the bay's fishing villages.

Tour operators are preparing to introduce the performances aboard traditional three-plank sailing boats operating along the bay's coastline.

Performers and local residents have been rehearsing aboard the boats to adapt the singing to the tour setting.

A tour operator representative said further preparations were needed before the performances could be offered to visitors, but expressed hope that the service would launch soon.

The initiative aims to combine sightseeing with local cultural experiences while helping preserve a traditional art form associated with Ha Long Bay's fishing communities.

It is also expected to appeal to international visitors, particularly cruise ship passengers interested in local culture.

The traditional three-plank sailing boats, closely associated with coastal fishing communities in Quang Ninh, particularly Quang Yen, feature a hull made from three wooden planks and two distinctive bat-wing-shaped sails.

Their design allows them to navigate flexibly, even against the wind, offering a different experience from modern tourist vessels.

The sailing tours were launched on June 29, 2026. Since then, six boats have served around 2,000 domestic and international visitors.
