In their study sent to the Ministry of Transport, ACV proposed a 4,000 metres second runway which would run in parallel with the first at Long Thanh, and supporting works including taxiways, lighting and signal systems. ACV will be the investor of this project, which would cost an estimated VND3.45 trillion (USD138.33 million).
Located in Binh Son Commune, Long Thanh District, the Long Thanh Airport Project will cover 5,000 hectares and cost about USD13.48 billion, with construction divided into three phases.
The first phase of the airport project will be completed next year and will enter operation in 2026. It will have one runway, a terminal, and several ancillary facilities. When the first phase is completed, the airport will serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo per year.
ACV proposed to start the construction of the second runway during the first phase.
According to ACV, the construction of the first runway is several months ahead of schedule, with technical operations expected to be completed before the end of April next year.
Under the current conditions, ACV estimates that the construction of the second runway will take about 16–18 months.
Once completed in 2040, Long Thanh would serve 100 million passengers and five million tonnes of cargo annually and is expected to replace HCM City's Tan Son Nhat as Vietnam's biggest airport.
