Tropical depression may develop into East Sea storm

A tropical depression may develop into a storm and enter the East Sea this weekend, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

At 7 am on July 16, the centre of the tropical depression was located approximately 14.1 degrees North latitude and 131.8 degrees East longitude, more than 1,000 kilometres southeast of Luzon Island in the Philippines.

The strongest winds near the centre of the tropical depression were at level 6 (39-49 kilometres per hour), with gusts reaching level 8. It is moving slowly northwestward at a speed of 5-10 kilometres per hour.

Over the next 1-2 days, the tropical depression is forecast to continue moving northwestward and may strengthen into a storm.

After intensifying into a storm in the north of Luzon Island, it is expected to move into the East Sea over the weekend (July 19-20).

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting is closely monitoring the system and will provide timely updates in upcoming bulletins to support response and preparedness efforts.

The tropical convergence zone, combined with the circulation of a tropical depression or storm, is expected to bring strong winds, high waves, and rough seas to the East Sea from July 19 to 20.

Widespread heavy rain is likely in northern provinces and from Thanh Hoa to Nghe An between July 20 and 25.
