The traps are placed in waters 5-7 metres deep near sandy seabeds and coral reefs, where squid gather. Once inside the shaded enclosure, the squid are unable to escape.
The traditional fishing season runs from the second to the seventh lunar month. Although the method is labour-intensive, local fishers say it consistently catches large squid and has been passed down through generations.
Each fisher typically catches 3-5 kilogrammes of squid a day, rising to 7-8 kilogrammes during the peak months of April and May on the lunar calendar. Fresh squid are sold live for about VND 350,000 (USD 13.30) per kilogramme.
According to local authorities, Long Phung Commune has 113 fishing boats, with many operating near shore to catch high-value seafood, including squid.
