HCM City orders inspections of 87 overcrowded preschools

HCM City has ordered inspections and corrective action at 87 independent preschools exceeding the legal limit of 70 children, amid concerns over child safety.

According to the municipal Department of Education and Training, a review as of October 13 found 72 independent preschools accommodating 71-100 children and another 15 with more than 100, breaching Ministry of Education and Training regulations.

Meanwhile, 168 previously overcrowded facilities have reduced enrolment to within the permitted limit.

Of the 72 preschools still accommodating 71-100 children, 24 have made no changes, eight have reduced enrolment from more than 100, and 40 are newly identified cases.

The department has instructed local authorities to inspect facilities, verify enrolment figures and operating licences, identify violations and require corrective measures.

Preschools exceeding capacity must develop plans to reduce enrolment and stop admitting children beyond their authorised limits.

Authorities have also been told to address persistent violations and prevent further breaches.

Inspections will cover staffing, infrastructure, fire safety, food hygiene and other conditions affecting children's welfare.

The department stressed that any safety risks must be promptly addressed to protect children's rights and wellbeing.
