HCM City launches 24-hour child protection hotline

HCM City launched a 24-hour hotline on October 22 to report child abuse, violence and exploitation, while also providing support for women facing violence.

The new 1022 service replaces the previous 1900.545.559 hotline and is integrated into the city's existing call centre system to improve coordination and speed up emergency responses.

Nguyen Tang Minh, deputy director of the municipal Department of Health, said the hotline would provide a unified, confidential system for receiving and handling reports.

Operators will assess each call, identify the location and nature of the incident, and forward information to the nearest relevant authority within five minutes.

Urgent cases threatening the safety of children or women will receive immediate intervention, with emergency cases to be handled within one working day and routine cases within three working days.

The city's Social Work and Youth Vocational Education Centre will coordinate with local authorities, police and healthcare providers to verify reports and arrange assistance.

Support may include medical care, psychological counselling, legal assistance and protection for victims of abuse.

The previous child protection hotline received 162 calls in 2021, rising to 248 in 2022 and 282 in 2023, covering abuse, violence, mental health concerns and legal support.

Authorities said the new system would strengthen cooperation between agencies, improve victim protection and ensure confidential handling of sensitive information.
