The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has submitted the airport's development plan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, to the Ministry of Construction for consideration.
Under the plan, the airport, located in Sao Vang Commune, is expected to handle two million passengers and 6,500 tonnes of cargo annually by 2030.

A second runway, measuring 3,800 metres long and 45 metres wide, will be built parallel to the existing runway, approximately 360 metres to its northeast.
The project also includes new taxiways and expanded aircraft parking facilities. The airport is planned to accommodate aircraft including the Airbus A320/A321 and Boeing 747/777.
By 2050, passenger capacity is projected to rise to seven million annually, alongside 23,000 tonnes of cargo. The airport will have around 20 aircraft parking stands and an expanded passenger terminal.
The proposed development will require nearly 845 hectares of land.
The aviation authority will work with consultants to finalise the detailed master plan before submitting it to the Ministry of Construction for appraisal and approval.
