Son La surveys over 80 flash flood and landslide risk sites

Son La Province has surveyed more than 80 areas at high risk of flash floods, landslides and flooding across 37 communes and wards since August.

The survey identified vulnerable locations in 76 villages and areas, while preliminary geological hazard assessments were conducted at 50 resettlement sites.

Major threats include ground cracking, slope failures, falling rocks, flooding and debris flows. Risks are heightened by steep terrain, complex geology, heavy rainfall and changes in vegetation cover, potentially threatening residential areas and infrastructure.

Based on the findings, consultants proposed seven groups of preventive measures, focusing on improved drainage, groundwater management, slope reinforcement, protection of watershed forests and monitoring of ground movement.

The measures also include early warnings and the evacuation of residents when necessary.

Consultants present findings from surveys of areas at high risk of landslides and flash floods.

For areas with complex geological conditions, Son La's Department of Agriculture and Environment will work with the Institute of Geological Sciences and Mineral Resources to conduct further assessments and develop appropriate solutions.

The efforts aim to protect lives and property while ensuring the long-term safety of residential communities.
