The project is operated by Tran Hong Quan Metallurgy Co., Ltd. and is Vietnam's first pilot facility producing primary aluminium from domestically processed alumina.
The smelter has an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes following the completion of its first phase after 11 years of construction. Capacity is expected to rise to 300,000 tonnes in late 2026 and 450,000 tonnes in early 2027.
The facility has a total investment of nearly VND 28 trillion (USD 1.07 billion) and covers 128 hectares.
According to the company, the aluminium ingots have a purity of 99.71 per cent and are produced using 500-kiloampere electrolysis technology, providing a foundation for higher-value aluminium products for domestic and export markets.
The project completes Vietnam's bauxite-to-aluminium production chain, allowing the country to process bauxite into finished aluminium products rather than exporting alumina for further refining abroad.
The project is expected to reduce aluminium imports by around USD 1.5 billion annually while supporting downstream industries including engineering, automotive manufacturing, electronics, construction, renewable energy and aerospace.
The project is also expected to create around 3,500 direct and indirect jobs and strengthen the Central Highlands' role as a hub for Vietnam's aluminium industry.
