The Asian openbill (Anastomus oscitans) is a seasonal migratory stork listed as Least Concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The birds stand 50-90 centimetres tall and have a wingspan of more than one metre.
The species feeds mainly on snails, insects and other small animals, helping control agricultural pests and maintain ecological balance.
The birds have recently been recorded in several parts of Gia Lai Province, including Tuy Phuoc, Tuy Phuoc Dong, Cat Tien, Ayun Pa, Ia Pa and Phu Thien.
Local residents are urged to protect the birds and enforce regulations on migratory bird conservation.
The flock roosts at the Con Chim wetland before flying to nearby rice fields to forage during the day.
