Danang plans 300-hectare international financial centre

Vietnam’s government has approved a master plan for Danang through 2050, including a proposed 300-320-hectare international financial centre linked to innovation and digital technology.

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc signed Decision 2016/QD-TTg on October 21, approving the city’s master plan to 2050, with a vision extending to 2075.

The plan covers the entire administrative area of Danang, including the Hoang Sa Special Zone and the sea areas under the city’s jurisdiction, with a total natural area of about 11,870 sq km.

By 2050, Danang is envisaged as an ecological, modern and smart coastal city with a distinctive identity, a high quality of life and an international profile. It is also expected to become a major national growth engine and a regional hub for start-ups, innovation, logistics, the marine economy, trade, finance, science and technology, digital transformation, tourism and heritage, education, and high-quality healthcare.

By 2075, the city aims to become a globally connected, smart and environmentally sustainable coastal metropolis, among Asia’s leading cities in terms of distinctive character and progressively meeting the criteria for a special-class urban centre.

Danang is positioned as a major economic and social centre for Vietnam and south-east Asia, driving growth in tourism while serving as a hub for innovation, trade, finance, logistics, high-tech manufacturing and the digital economy. It is also intended to become an international transport and freight transit hub, providing the Mekong subregion with access to the sea and connections to ASEAN and global markets.

Tourism, trade and finance

Tourism is planned across the city, covering coastal and inland-waterway travel, ecotourism, community-based experiences, resorts, cultural and historical heritage, spiritual tourism, entertainment, shopping, sports and wellness. The plan allocates about 9,700-10,200 hectares of land for tourism development.

Three main tourism zones are envisaged. The first comprises the potential national tourism areas of Son Tra, Cu Lao Cham and Ba Na, with development controlled to protect their natural environments. The second centres on the cultural heritage sites of Hoi An and My Son, alongside Cham heritage and historical revolutionary sites. The third focuses on beaches and bays, with a chain of tourism and resort cities and a night-time economy along the eastern coastline.

In trade and finance, the plan calls for nationally and internationally significant commercial centres, an international exhibition and convention centre, and commercial and financial streets. The Danang Free Trade Zone will be linked to major transport hubs. Plans also include a regional wholesale agricultural market serving central Vietnam and the Central Highlands, alongside a logistics centre covering about 130 hectares linked to a wholesale market in Thang Binh Commune.

The proposed Vietnam International Financial Centre in Danang will cover approximately 300-320 hectares and be connected to an ecosystem of innovation and digital technology.

Logistics and industrial development

The plan envisages a network of multimodal logistics centres, including Hoa Nhon, Kim Lien railway station, Danang International Airport, Hoa Vang Commune, and facilities supporting wholesale trade linked to the Hoa Phuoc wholesale market. Other proposed hubs include Chu Lai International Airport, the Chu Lai national logistics centre, Tam Ky-Quang Phu, Chaval-Nam Giang, and logistics and warehousing facilities at border crossings including Nam Giang, Tay Giang and Bo Y.

Smaller logistics centres and warehouses are also planned across the city.

Danang will also develop industrial facilities, including dual-use defence industries, alongside logistics infrastructure. Development is intended to follow green and smart models that improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and protect the environment, while maintaining safe distances from residential areas and making efficient use of land.
