Authorities in Quang Tri Province have culled nearly 2,000 pigs weighing over 100 tonnes following a major outbreak of African swine fever (ASF), the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment announced on July 15.

The first outbreak was detected on May 15 in Kim Phu Commune. Despite efforts by local authorities and animal health agencies to contain the disease, it has since spread to 11 communes across the province.

In response to the escalating situation, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has rolled out several control measures, including the distribution of 2,350 litres of disinfectant to affected areas.

Animal health officials have also been directed to swiftly eliminate infected livestock, monitor herds in surrounding villages, and tighten control over pig slaughter and pork sales. Specialists have been deployed to support local governments in disease containment and disinfection operations.

African swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs. While it poses no risk to human health, the virus is often fatal to pigs and can devastate farming communities, with no approved vaccine currently available.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge farmers to report any signs of infection promptly to prevent further spread.
