The northern province of Dien Bien has launched a Russian language teaching programme for ethnic minority students, aiming to improve access to modern education and support international integration.
The initiative reflects efforts to diversify foreign language education as Vietnam deepens global integration, opening up new development opportunities for younger generations.
Local education authorities have strengthened international cooperation, working with Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia to implement the programme and improve language teaching quality.
The Dien Bien boarding high school for ethnic students has been selected as the pilot site, with two classes of 50 grade 10 students taught directly by native-speaking lecturers.
Classes are held three times a week, with each session comprising three periods, allowing students to gradually build familiarity and develop communication skills in Russian.
School vice principal Pham Thi Thanh Huyen said the programme aligns with policies to introduce a second foreign language in schools and strengthens cooperation between Dien Bien and Saint Petersburg.
She added that students benefit from structured learning, broader knowledge and improved communication skills, helping them build an international outlook and prepare for future study opportunities.
Initial results have been encouraging, with interactive teaching methods helping students quickly engage with the language, from basic pronunciation to everyday communication.

Students said learning with native teachers has enhanced motivation and cultural understanding, while also opening potential career pathways linked to the Russian language.
Lecturers from Herzen University praised students’ diligence and positive learning environment, noting strong engagement and collaboration in the classroom.
Provincial education officials said the programme goes beyond language instruction, serving as a practical step to promote international integration and equip students with skills needed in a globalised environment.
