Tran Nhan Tong Street which gathers the largest number of gold shops in the capital city saw lines of people waiting from very early Thursday morning.

To Hoa Binh, 66, said that he got up at 3 am this morning to go and buy some gold.
"I bought only a ring to hope for good luck this year," he said. "I've kept this habit of buying some gold on the God of Wealth Day to wish for good luck for many years. I think this is a nice tradition of our country."

Many other early customers shared the same thoughts with the elderly man.

Most of the shops opened at 6.30 am and have arranged many guards to help ensure security and guide customers.

Customers are required to declare their health status and take temperatures before entering the shops

A representative at the Bao Tin Minh Chau Shop said that the number of customers increased by 30 percent compared to normal days and by 15 percent compared to the same period last year. "Although we are also selling online, more customers prefer buying at the shop," he said.

Gold prices have slightly increased today compared to yesterday's prices.

Jewellery companies have stocked up on various gold items like traditional figurines of the God of Wealth inscribed with the words Phuc (Happiness), Loc (Prosperity), Tai (Wealth), and Tho (Longevity), the 12 zodiac animals and lucky charm bracelets made of 24k and 18k gold.

Since it is the Year of the Tiger, the animal also widely features on gold products.
