North-South rail line reopens after eight-day disruption

Vietnam’s North-South railway reopened at 8.30 pm on November 25 after an eight-day suspension caused by severe flooding, the Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) said.

More than 1,000 workers and heavy machinery were mobilised over four days to repair 61 damaged sections between Dieu Tri and Thap Cham stations in the south-central region. Trains are initially running at about 5 km/h for safety, gradually increasing to 15 km/h.

During an inspection on Tuesday afternoon, Deputy Construction Minister Nguyen Danh Huy praised railway units for swiftly addressing landslides and major damage, noting early test runs ensured the route could reopen promptly.

Between November 17 and 24, rail services were halted for 65 passenger trains, leading to over 25,200 refunded tickets worth about VND 17.6 billion (USD 960,000).

Railway operators also provided free meals to stranded passengers, costing more than VND 600 million, including over 10,500 main meals and 6,700 light meals.

Many freight trains remain halted along the route or at departure stations awaiting new schedules. Some shippers of consumer goods and food have cancelled orders, while cargo already on trains is expected to be offloaded and moved by road to meet delivery deadlines, resulting in additional costs.
