NGO contributions recognised

Contributions by foreign nongovernmental organisations to Vietnam's development was praised at a ceremony last night in Hanoi.

The annual event, entitled Vietnam Thanks You, which is co-organised by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations and Vietnam Television, aims to recognise the works of the international organisations and donors.

Addressing the ceremony, union chairman Vu Xuan Hong said international NGOs had helped increase donations for the country and strengthened friendship between Vietnam and peoples of the world as well as the donor community.

Merit certificates were granted to 52 NGOs to recognise their contributions to poverty alleviation and sustainable development this year.

A full 72 organisations have committed to provide funds next year totalling $153 million for hunger eradication and poverty alleviation in Vietnam.

Since 1991 Vietnam has had relationships with 900 foreign NGOs. Total donations of more than $3 billion have been received so far, with the average disbursement rate of $300 million a year in past years.

The NGOs operated in 63 cities and provinces across the country in various fields from socio-economic development and war legacy recovery to climate change and natural disaster rescue.
