Duong Bich Phuong diagnosed with saliva gland cancer

The family of Duong Chi Linh and Nguyen Thi Xuyen is a poor household in Hamlet 5, Khanh Binh Tay Bac Commune. They have no farmland and work as labourers for little money. They have four children together and 13-year-old Duong Bich Phuong is the oldest daughter.

At first, Phuong felt pain in the jaw and left cheek before finding a bump below the jawline. She went to several hospitals to no avail before being diagnosed with saliva gland cancer.

The tumour grows larger each day. It not only causes pain but also makes it difficult for Phuong to talk or eat. Phuong has been operated twice and is having chemotherapy treatment. But she is too weak and often has high fever and bleeding after each session.

Phuong's parents sold the house with a small garden to pay hospital charges but her condition got worse.

"We rented a house in Dong Nai Province to take care of her better. However, my husband fell from the second floor at work and injured his spine. He has been bed-bound for two years," Phuong's mother, Nguyen Thi Xuyen, said.

They moved back to Ca Mau after the accident and Phoung's treatment was halted. Xuyen's acquaintance let the family put up a small house in their field. Xuyen accepts every work she can do for VND80,000 (USD3.52) to VND100,000 a day. She also continues borrowing money for Phuong's treatment in HCM City. Even though they have to sleep in the hospital's hallway, Xuyen said it was better because they were given charity meals.

"We can't afford to return to Ca Mau after Phuong's session so we take buses to Dong Nai Province. Phuong stays at an acquaintance's house while I find work," Xuyen said.
